Women’s Services Redevelopment, Gloucestershire NHS

Redevelopment of the Womens Services section of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital resulted in Trenton Consultants getting involved to ensure a robust and safe fire strategy was developed. The Trust Fire Officer and approving authority had done a significant amount of good work however our fire engineers were able to pull all their work together into a cohesive strategy.

Retail Store

During installation of a mezzanine floor in a large retail store some last minute changes to create a more pleasant atmosphere for customers resulted in a change to the fire safety provisions. The local fire authority was a small rural brigade which had very limited experience of relatively large retail premises. They were very nervous about agreeing various issues and the late change took them by surprise and they refused to accept it despite it being effectively code compliant.

Retail store, Clapham

It was decided by one of the large retail chains to install a mezzanine floor into an existing store in Clapham. A smoke ventilation system had been included as part of the initial design and we were brought in to assess why it had been installed and if there were any alternatives.

Supermarket, Welwyn Garden City

The proposed alterations to the Welwyn Garden City store has identified extended travel distances both on the shop floor and in the basement car park. There is no effective way of making these compliant with existing codes or standards therefore Trenton Consultant’s fire engineers were asked to get involved.

Alexander Stadium

A plan for Alexander Stadium in Birmingham has been formulated to completely redevelop the site. The first stage of this redevelopment involves construction of a new 5,000 grandstand. Windsor House

A code compliant solution for this nine storey office block including basement car park would have required two full fire fighting shafts with lifts designed to BS5588 Part 5. This was based on the overall floor area. However, as one of the fire fighting stairs was located such that no part of the floor was less than 60m hose laying distance from its lobby then the second stair was identified as a significant overprovision. This reduction resulted in significant gains for the client, he significantly reduced the cost of the stair core by removing lifts and ventilation, and provided a striking and aesthetically pleasing access stair. Our total fee was significantly less than the costs we saved.

Hastings College - Ore Valley

Often a simple review of architects plans can identify significant efficiencies in build costs, construction and building operation. For instance in one college building one of our experienced and professional engineers identified reductions in levels of fire compartmentation to riser and lift shafts. Through application of fire engineering principles we could also remove six fire rated door sets and simplify means of escape.

Hastings College - Station Plaza

Trenton Consultants developed a fire engineered strategy to avoid the need for sprinklers in a large college while maintaining a demonstrably safe building for occupants. We achieved approval from both the Approved Inspector, AIS, and the local fire authority with a minimum of delay through early consultation and being available to discuss the issues through whatever manner they preferred. In addition the report was clear and concise to avoid any misinterpretation.

Chelsea Academy

Chelsea Academy is a new development near Chelsea Harbour for 11 to 18 years in the heart of a busy residential and commercial area. Taking up the majority of a city block and surrounded by roads on all sides there were significant problems with evacuating over 2000 students and staff. This was an unusual situation as outside circumstances were effecting the internal fire safety concepts.

Torquay Community College

Trenton Consultants were asked to do a review of the sprinkler system installation. This simple and relatively inexpensive exercise identified significant savings in terms of capital costs and maintenance of the system, and through a proactive approach and a total building approach to fire safety even at the late stage we were introduced we justified the removal of the insulation recommendation to fire resistant glazing, a significant cost saving.

The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys

The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys operate a 6 storey building in the centre of London. The building consists of predominantly offices but includes residential levels, retail at basement level and a restaurant at ground. Recent renovation work involving combining two neighbouring buildings to increase lettable floor area created an issue regarding means of escape. It was being suggested by the approving bodies that a pressurisation system was the solution to a number of access issues caused by the modifications. However, Trenton Consultants were then asked to review the project as part of a wider analysis of the fire safety systems.

One Hyde Park

By working closely with the design team and approving authority we were able to deal with all the issues raised across a 3 year construction programme with only very minimal fire safety issues at completion. This was a major achievement considering the highly engineered, high specification building, and testament to the hard work and expertise of Laing O’Rourke, CTG architects and ourselves.
