Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

CFD modelling is also one of those areas where you need highly skilled and experienced operatives to ensure the model is built and run correctly, with the right parameters and which stands up to third party review. Trenton Fire have an engineer with a doctorate on CFD modelling and has used his skills on a wide variety of projects.

Through the application of CFD modelling smoke ventilation systems can be significantly reduced as the accuracy of the analysis is much greater. By producing our own specifications you are not stuck with one manufacturer or supplier but can enter the market and get the best price from any ventilation system provider. The cost of the modelling is not as much as you may think either, Trenton Fire have developed a suite of CFD models for all buildings from warehouses to dead end corridors in residential buildings. These models have had perimeters defined by experience on other projects so where possibly 8 or 10 models may have had to be done in the past, at a cost of £15,000 to £20,000, we can provide accurate and efficient modelling with parameters previously agreed with Building Control bodies and metropolitan fire authorities using just 3 or 4 models.

For example we have recently completed a design and build project for a very large and high end residential development in London which had enormous amounts of plant in the basements. It soon became clear that additional riser space was needed and the value engineering review highlighted the large open ducts ventilating the fire fighting shafts and stair cores. We did a great deal of work varying different parameters to find out how best to model the situation and what concerns the Building Control body and fire authority have. This suite of tests we developed now feeds into our other projects and where beneficial we can use this information to provide the same result but in a much shorter time scale.
